How to Cook Quinoa on the Stove
Carolina Cooking · Everyday cooking basics
The quick answer
Use 1 cup dry quinoa with 2 cups water. After the mixture returns to a boil, simmer covered on low for 12 minutes, then rest off the heat for 5–10 minutes. This Food Hero method yields about 3 cups cooked quinoa. Follow your package if its instructions differ.
How to use this guide
Start here: Decide how much cooked quinoa you need, read the package and set out a saucepan with a lid. Follow the method below, including the rest—not just the simmer. This guide is for plain quinoa, not a seasoned boxed mix.
Set out your ingredients and equipment
You need 1 cup quinoa, 2 cups water and, optionally, ¼ teaspoon salt. Have a saucepan, lid, measuring cup and fine-mesh strainer ready. This quantity makes about 3 cups cooked.
Cook it in four stages
1. Rinse if needed. Wash your hands. If the quinoa is not pre-rinsed, rinse it well in the fine-mesh strainer.
2. Bring to a boil. Boil the measured water, add the quinoa and optional salt, and let the mixture return to a boil.
3. Simmer gently. Turn the heat to low, cover and cook for 12 minutes.
4. Rest off the heat. Turn off the heat and let it stand for about 5–10 minutes, until the water is absorbed and the texture suits you. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.
Dry quinoa, water and cooked yield
| Dry quinoa | Water | Approximate cooked yield |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cup | 2 cups | 3 cups |
| 2 cups | 4 cups | 6 cups |
How to cook 2 cups of quinoa
The two-cup row doubles this method’s ingredients; it is a scaling guide, not a separately kitchen-tested batch. Use a larger covered pot with room for boiling and expansion. Do not double the simmer time automatically: check absorption and tenderness, and follow your package’s batch directions. Allow more time for the larger quantity of water to reach a boil.
Dry and cooked cups are not interchangeable in a recipe.
Check texture before serving
- Water remains after simmering: complete the covered rest before deciding the batch is too wet. This method includes absorption off the heat.
- Quinoa is still firm: check the package’s variety-specific instructions. Do not serve it solely because the timer ended.
- The batch is soft or mushy: extra cooking cannot restore the original firmness. Check the measured water and heat level for the next batch rather than assuming all quinoa products need identical timing.
How much quinoa per person?
For planning a side dish, allow about ½ cup cooked quinoa per person; for a larger grain-bowl base, start with about ¾ cup. These are serving suggestions, not dietary requirements. Adjust for appetite and the rest of the meal.
Using this guide’s approximate yield of 3 cups cooked from 1 cup dry quinoa:
| People | Cooked quinoa for ½-cup sides | Approximate dry quinoa |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 cup | ⅓ cup |
| 4 | 2 cups | ⅔ cup |
| 6 | 3 cups | 1 cup |
Actual yield varies by quinoa and moisture absorbed. These dry amounts are yield estimates, not separate tested small-batch cooking instructions. For predictable results, cook the full batch above and measure portions after fluffing.

Choose its job before you cook
A side dish
Choose a main dish first and decide whether the quinoa is replacing another side or being served alongside it. Keep the main recipe’s cooking method unchanged.
A build-your-own bowl
Write down the bowl’s parts: quinoa, a vegetable, a protein you enjoy and a dressing or sauce. Prepare each using its own instructions, then assemble your portion.
A recipe ingredient
Check whether the ingredient list asks for dry quinoa or cooked quinoa. Measuring a cup before cooking is not the same instruction as measuring a cup afterward. Do not change a recipe’s other liquid quantities by guesswork.
Make your next batch easier
Record the brand, amount and result after cooking. If you preferred a different texture, consult that product’s directions before changing several variables together. Keep the saucepan size and measured quantities in your notes so you have a useful comparison next time.
