Dessert Recipes from Around the World

5 recipes · 5 countries

Find your next sweet finish

Choose a dessert by the time you have—not just the time it spends in the oven. These five recipes range from chocolate squares and lemon shortbread to chilled custards and coconut rice with fresh mango.

These are home-kitchen adaptations inspired by the countries shown, not a claim to represent every regional version.

Bake and slice

Two tray-baked options for sharing. Allow the cooling time before cutting neat portions.

Fudgy Dark Chocolate Brownies

United States

Fudgy Dark Chocolate Brownies

Rich dark chocolate brownies with a delicate top and a dense, tender center, made with melted chocolate, cocoa and a touch of vanilla.

Prep 20 min   ·   Total 1 hr 50 min   ·   Serves 16

Before you choose: Use an 8-inch square metal pan and plan at least an hour for cooling. The sixteen servings are small squares, not sixteen large restaurant portions.

Lemon Butter Shortbread

Scotland

Lemon Butter Shortbread

Tender, buttery shortbread fingers with fresh lemon zest and a light sugar finish, baked in one pan and cut while still warm.

Prep 20 min   ·   Total 2 hr 10 min   ·   Serves 16

Before you choose: This recipe uses an 8-inch square metal pan. Its total includes a 30-minute dough chill and cooling; cut on the scored lines while warm, but lift only after cooling.

Chill ahead

Individual desserts that need several hours in the refrigerator. Plan these before the rest of the meal.

Vanilla Panna Cotta with Strawberry Sauce

Italy

Vanilla Panna Cotta with Strawberry Sauce

A softly set vanilla cream dessert topped with a simple strawberry sauce, portioned into individual cups for an easy make-ahead finish to a meal.

Prep 20 min   ·   Total 6 hr 30 min   ·   Serves 6

Before you choose: Serve this panna cotta in cups. Allow at least six hours to set and keep the strawberry sauce separate until both components are cold.

Citrus and Cinnamon Crema Catalana

Spain

Citrus and Cinnamon Crema Catalana

A smooth stovetop custard infused with citrus peel and cinnamon, chilled in shallow dishes and finished with a thin crackling sugar crust.

Prep 20 min   ·   Total 4 hr 50 min   ·   Serves 6

Before you choose: Have six shallow heatproof dishes ready. Chill the custard for at least four hours; the caramel top is added just before serving with suitable equipment.

Fruit and coconut

A warm-and-cool combination with a soaking step that belongs on your schedule.

Mango Coconut Sticky Rice

Thailand

Mango Coconut Sticky Rice

Tender steamed sticky rice absorbs sweet coconut milk and is served with ripe mango and a lightly salted coconut sauce for a tropical dessert.

Prep 20 min   ·   Total 5 hr 10 min   ·   Serves 4

Before you choose: Buy glutinous sweet rice, not ordinary long-grain rice. The total includes four hours of soaking and time for the hot rice to absorb coconut milk.

Plan before you cook

Need something today?

Brownies have the shortest listed total in this collection at 1 hour 50 minutes, including cooling. Shortbread takes about 2 hours 10 minutes. Neither is a last-minute ten-minute dessert.

Preparing for tomorrow?

Panna cotta is designed around a long chill. Crema Catalana also needs advance refrigeration, but its caramel topping waits until serving. Sticky rice requires soaking before steaming rather than an overnight finished dessert.

Check before shopping

Read the full ingredient list for dairy, eggs, wheat and other dietary needs. Gelatin appears in the panna cotta; coconut milk does not make every recipe in this collection dairy-free. Nutrition estimates refer to each recipe’s stated portion, without unlisted extras.
